Going mainstream or being the biggest thing happening underground
This is a question every writer, creator, business person, and artist must ask themselves to uncover the true meaning in their pursuit of purpose.
One thing people fail to understand is that sometimes we can’t have it all but we can have the most important things if we know what we are looking for and are ready to ignore a bunch of other things that don’t define our goals and how we want it to be.
Take a look around and ask yourself what would you rather have, why you create, and what impact you are looking to make in your career and the minds of people.
People define your success but you shape their perspective on how they see your success and how they tend to define it. Artists, writers, and business people are every day creating not just products and art but also an illusion and perspective.
Many artists and business people alike are rarely aware of this so they leave the public perception of them in the hands of chance and this goes on to affect the creations they make.
But who would you rather be? Someone who consciously creates and curates the perception of the public and how they see their creation or someone leaving it in the hands of chance and hoping they make it big enough to go mainstream.
The mainstream is a flood and the result of uncertainty. No man has the control to predict mass appeal and most times people who do enjoy mass appeal fail to understand that this is 90% a work of chance and if they are to do the same thing in a different body and personality they might not enjoy the privilege they enjoy now.
It is lovely to be mainstream, people say that is where all the fame and money go but you can learn to control your effect as a writer, artist, and businessperson by being the biggest thing happening underground.
It is like consciously creating your crowd, talking to specific people, and using the language they understand. In such a scene, you are not trying to go wide but deep. You want to be understood deeply and felt deeply. You are building a strong community and not just a fanbase.
You are giving the people a family cookout session, there is a family atmosphere in your creation and how you handle your publicity and relationship with the people who choose to patronize you.
This my friend will remove you from that race of going nowhere and having no strong ties with anyone that decides to engage with your work.
